Following the pattern set by its predecessors, everyone’s favorite Canadian jazz ensemble BADBADNOTGOOD is back again with their fourth solo studio album, IV. While the roman-numeral fixation remains the same, the band does not. BBND officially adds frequent collaborator and saxophone aficionado Leland Whitty this time around and is a wonderful addition to the crew. Whitty’s presence is sure to be heard all over the album, as it has already in released singles “Speaking Gently,” “Time Moves Slow,” “Lavender,” “Confessions Pt II,” and more recently, “In Your Eyes.”
Two of the album’s vocal collaborators have already been heard, with Sam Herring of Future Islands lending his sultry voice on “Time Moves Slow” and Charlotte Day Wilson on “In Your Eyes.” Mick Jenkins is bound to have a verse in “Hyssop of Love” while the saxophone stylings of Colin Stetson of Arcade Fire and Bon Iver on “Confessions” ring true. Kaytranada additionally lends his unique, electronic sound after the band lent him a hand with a track on his recent debut album, 99.9%.
After their last three solo albums, not including Sour Soul (the collaboration with Ghostface Killah), the group is finally gaining considerable traction, landing big names like Stetson and Herring as features. This is especially shocking having created strictly instrumental albums with their previous solo outputs. It’s a welcome change nonetheless as it will hopefully add a fitting touch to the hugely impressive tracks these gentlemen continue to make without fail.
Look out for IV, officially hitting the internet on Friday, July 8th, going toe-to-toe against highly anticipated Schoolboy Q’s Blank Face LP. Will jazz reign supreme over the summer or will TDE’s own bring home the gold? Ears around the world will decide, but for now, stream BBNG’s singles below and check back here at True Too for everything Hip-hop.
