With the release of her debut project Heavn only days away (set to release July 11th via Closed Sessions), breakout Chicago singer Jamila Woods decided to bless fans with the soulful single “LSD” featuring Chance The Rapper. This isn’t your usual LSD inspired song but instead an ode to Chicago and the Lake Shore Drive expressway. Who better to accompany her on such a track than Chicago’s own favorite social activist Chance The Rapper. This isn’t the first time the pair have teamed up as they have collaborated on tracks in the past like Sunday Candy and Blessings.
When I was a kid, getting on Lake Shore Drive from the south side to go downtown was magical. I lived on the East Coast for a few years and people would laugh when I told them we have beaches and a lake we can swim in. I always wanted to write about that. A lot of people get Chicago wrong. I’ve developed this protective feeling about how we’re portrayed, and at the same time I’m acutely aware of the issues we face and the root causes of these issues. It’s important to me that there’s not just one story told about our city. ‘LSD’ is an ode to Chicago, a song for the complicated love I have for my city.
– Jamila Woods
“LSD” is a smooth track with a tasteful Donell Jones sample provided by producer Odd Couple. Chance drops a playful and fun verse as well which includes a clever Derrick Rose/NYC reference.
We the number one gentrified
Run inside, gimme my land, the new Chi tits’ perky
Face lift and makeshift spaces
Invest the rest in a number 25 Knicks jersey
It must be a recent addition to the track as Derrick Rose’s trade to the New York Knicks NBA franchise was a fairly recent move. Just like the Bulls are doing with D Wade, Jamila is recruiting an allstar Chicago cast of Chance The Rapper, Donnie Trumpet and Saba for her debut project. Check out the tracklist below and prepare yourself for Heavn which is due out any day now.
