Within the last few months, Chicago has been thrust to the forefront of the Hip Hop world with fans anticipating and discovering the next hot sound at every corner. The friendly people over at True Too just might have discovered our breakout star of 2016 with her latest release, HEAVN. Amongst a sea of crowded talent which is Chi-Town, a young woman by the name of Jamila Woods stands out like a beacon of light and hope. Her trajectory can be described by nothing less than heaven sent. She’s now featuring in songs with Hip Hop heavyweights like Macklemore and Chance The Rapper when just a bit ago she didn’t have her own Wikipedia page. Low-key, her performance on “Questions” from The Social Experiment’s Surf is 2015’s most overlooked gem.
HEAVN is about black girlhood, about Chicago, about the people we miss who have gone on to prepare a place for us somewhere else, about the city/world we aspire to live in,”
A press release sent out by Woods states that “I hope this album encourages listeners to love themselves and love each other. For black and brown people, caring for ourselves and each other is not a neutral act. It is a necessary and radical part of the struggle to create a more just society. Our healing and survival are essential to the fight.”
HEAVN features a Chicago-influenced, all-star cast of producers and artists including Nate Fox, Peter Cottontale, oddCouple, Jus Love, Carter Lang, Chance The Rapper, Saba, Donnie Trumpet, Lorine Chia and Noname Gypsy.
