Tennessee is a soulful place with a deep history rooted in music. Memphis is no exception to this, and Jon Waltz is putting on for his city and following in its storied footsteps. While it had been a while since Waltz released new music, he brought the heat this past month with a new track titled “Riot” that contains such intensity and charm it’s amazing. Running a little over three and a half minutes, “Riot” is as smooth as any other contemporary track out there.
Mother nature never meant to birth another child like me / Sitting in the grass smoke a cigarette / but you ain’t getting high like me (yeah)
I’ll get this out of the way now and say that Waltz’s skills remind me a lot of Frank Ocean, with his tone and rapping style. As an artist, being compared to Mr. Ocean isn’t a bad thing by any means, but Waltz is far from just a phony Frank act. He holds his own and the track is unique to him alone. When the hook rolls in it’s basically impossible to not be won over by Waltz and his dynamic voice. Like the gasoline and rubber, Waltz is burning up the mic throughout “Riot.” With lines like “And we been watching too much westerns / Now we pistol pop,” the wonderful lyricism is just the icing on the cake. There’s something about this track that gives off incredible vibes. The smooth and bouncy production is the perfect accompaniment to Waltz’s voice. This that type of joint you play loud to really get the full effect.
