Haiti-born producer Kaytranada finally released his long-awaited album, 99.9%. In 2014, Kaytranada signed to UK record label XL Recordings and has been previewing snippets of the album since then. The funk-inspired LP features the likes of Vic Mensa, GoldLink, BADBADNOTGOOD, and Phonte, among others.
After an interesting April for the producer, including a revealing Fader Exclusive interview and releasing a video game promoting 99.9%, Kaytranada delivers an amazing and holistic album, and this is all from his ability to take his hardships that he’s experienced in life
In the Fader interview, Kaytranada talks of wanting to strictly produce for rappers, however this changed when others have noticed the talent within his remixes.
The producer takes it back with his neo-funk/hip-hop fusion. 99.9% begins using funky dance vibes. Kaytranada flexes his uncanny ability to weave drums, synths, bass and claps on the intro, previewing the consistent atmosphere of 99.9%. His further ability to sample and nail hooks makes the project an ideal easy-listening experience.
Great features litter the album, with artists like Vic Mensa, Anderson .Paak, and Little Dragon behind a few tracks, if there’s any indication of how well an album may be, just look at Kaytranada’s tracklist.
Others have noticed the talent behind the name as well. With international recognition, Kaytranada’s “Glowed Up” featuring Anderson .Paak debuted on BBC Radio. Pitchfork gave the single the “Best New Track” designation and for clear reasons. The man came to make a dent in the music industry and he’s here to stay.
Kaytranada is a workhorse when it comes to creating music. With twenty projects out, half of them being under Kaytradamus and a plethora of remixes, the man’s got a couple obsessions that keeps him alive and going for the next day. One of them being the obvious love for Hip-hop.
