Wiz Khalifa Pays Tribute to Phife Dawg

With many artists and music lovers still in shock from Phife Dawg‘s sudden passing, people have been paying their respects in many ways. Like his fellow Pittsburgh rapper Mac Miller, Wiz Khalifa also took to music to pay tribute to the late and great Phife with a remix of “Electric Relaxation.” This popular track features one of Phife’s more well known verses and efforts, and holds the token line “I like em brown, yellow, Puerto Rican or Haitian / Name is Phife Dawg from the Zulu Nation.” Who else better to hop on this track than one of the most relaxed rappers of all time?

Smoke one for Phife Dawg

The track is a back and forth between Wiz and Phife, channeling the classic relationship Q-Tip and Phife had while members of A Tribe Called Quest. While it may not be possible to really grasp that raw chemistry Phife and Tip had when on the mic together, Wiz does his best at flipping the track into his own, and making a nice dedication that hip-hop fans can appreciate. This is vintage Wiz, taking a nice mellow beat and turning it into a relaxing smokers daydream. With heavy weed references throughout, Wiz just wants the people to pay respects to the five foot assassin and light one up in his honor.

The track was posted to the Taylor Gang website and can also be downloaded straight from there. Wiz has had himself a busy year, but he wouldn’t miss the chance to shout out one of the all time greats. It’s nice to see the hip-hop community rallying around Phife as he was such an important piece to the puzzle. Let us know what you think of Wiz’s dedication to Phife in the comments and stay True Too.
