90059, Jay Rock’s long-awaited debut on a major label, looms on the horizon with an unorthodox preorder-based release campaign coming out from TDE. Today we get a preview of “Easy Bake,” a cut from the new album that features fellow TDE members Kendrick Lamar and SZA.
We only have what sounds like an incomplete cut of the final version of the song (SZA’s feature is nowhere to be found here), but there’s still plenty to gather from this excerpt. On this preview we can hear Jay Rock using a higher pitched voice than he usually does, so we can expect him to vary his vocal deliveries on 90059 from his standard gravelly, heavy-handed flow. We also get to hear Rock trades lines with Kendrick and it’s already clear how much these two rappers have grown since recording “Constipation,” another track where Rock and Kendrick trade bars with each others. The chemistry already present on “constipation” is bolstered by a more fully developed confidence in both rappers on “Easy Bake.”
TDE has yet to officially confirm when 90059 will be dropping, but a fan has reported on Twitter that the digital release will be on Sept. 4 while the physical release will drop on Sept. 11. It’s about time Jay Rock gets his shine.
