Today, for the first time, Los Angeles based director Zachary Butler released his documentary on Bay Area Rap superstar Mac Dre, Legend of the Bay, for purchase. The film was previously exhibited last year in various public settings, and even won the 2015 San Francisco Black Film Festival’s “People’s Choice Award.”

Legend of the Bay contains unreleased video footage of the Bay Area rap pioneer, depicting his transition from a from high school talent shows to a becoming a (wrongfully) convicted felon to worldwide mainstream success, and everything in between. In addition to video clips of the Thizz King, Legend of the Bay includes brand new exclusive interviews with his mother, Too $hort, E-40, Wiz Khalifa, Davey D, Warren G and several other artists and scholars.

Per Zachary himself:

For people who don’t know Mac Dre’s work, I hope they can understand what a powerful influence he has had on music and culture. For the people who are already fans, I hope they get a chance to see the man behind the music they love, and maybe think about his career in a new way.
