Today in Hip Hop History: Funky Technician Lord Finesse & DJ Mike Smooth
Funky Technician (1990)

Today in Hip Hop History: February 6, 1990

26 years ago today Lord Finesse and DJ Mike Smooth released their debut album, Funky Technician.

Production on the album was handled by DJ Mike Smooth in addition to DJ Premier, Showbiz and Diamond D, the latter two of which became members of the Diggin’ in the Crates Crew. Rightfully so. With such a production team, and a feature from A.G. of Showbiz & A.G.Funky Technician, on paper, already resonates with hard-hitting drums, New York boom bap rhymes and samples obscure enough to fool your uncle stuck in the 70’s.

Funky Technician began the career that is Lord Finesse’s, arguably one of the greatest Golden Age hip hop producers. Despite lacking in deserved commercial success, the album did peak at #93 on the U.S. Billboard Top R&B Albums (don’t ask me how it’s “R&B”) and was selected as one of The Source’s 100 Best Rap Albums of all time in 1998.
