June 30th, 1998

The Black Eyed Peas released their debut studio album, “Behind the Front”, through Interscope Records in 1998. The BEPS at the time consisted of, and Taboo, with Fergie joining later in 2002.

A few of the songs from “Behind The Front” were demos for an album titled “Grass Roots”, that was to be released a year earlier on Ruthless Records. The Black Eyed Peas went by the name “A.T.B.A.N. Klann” before they were dropped by the label. The album’s first official single was “Joints & Jam” featuring Ingrid Dupree.

The Black Eyed Peas brought a breath of fresh air to a struggling time in hip hop with their positivity and fun raps. The album uses live instrumentation, and has been compared to the likes of The Roots, A Tribe Called Quest, Jurassic 5 and many more.
