Today in Hip Hop History: February 1, 1975
Happy 41st birthday to Big Boi of OutKast! Born Antwan Andre Patton, the Atlanta-based MC is one half of the greatest hip hop duo of all time. Alongside Andre 3000, Big Boi transcended beyond most peoples’ comprehension of hip hop artistry and techniques. Their six albums remain one of the most complete yet diverse discographies in hip hop history.
After moving to Atlanta at a younger age, Big Boi met Andre at their performing arts high school and they signed to LaFace Records in 1992. By 1994, the duo released their southern style gangster yet socially conscious album Southernplayalisticadillacmuzik. Followed by ATLiens, Aquemini, Stankonia, Speakerboxxx/The Love Below and Idlewild. They produced six straight Platinum albums and received universal acclaim from both mainstream and underground hip hop.
In addition to his work with Andre, Big Boi has since released two solo albums, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty and Vicious Lies and Dangerous Rumors, in addition to a recent 2015 collaboration Big Grams alongside electronic band Phantogram.
Largely under-appreciated within the dynamics of OutKast, Big Boi remains an integral part of the duo and their success. The balance of Andre with Big Boi made them who they are, so don’t sleep on Big Boi…
