Today in Hip Hop History: January 29, 2000
16 years ago today, Dr. Dre released the second single off of his sophomore album, 2001, titled “Forget About Dre.” The track featured his (at the time) protege Eminem and remains one of the classic tracks off the reinvigorating album.
“Forget About Dre” continued the trend of his previous single, “Still D.R.E.,” which both saw Dre shaking off the people doubting his abilities to continue making quality rap music. Additionally, the track contained a response line directed towards Suge Knight and Death Row Records:
Who you think brought you the oldies, Eazy-E’s, Ice Cube’s, and D.O.C.’s
the Snoop D.O. Double G’s, and the group that said ‘Motherfuck the police’?
And of course, the classic hook by SLIM SHADY:
Nowadays everybody wanna talk like they got something to say
But nothing comes out when they move their lips
Just a bunch of gibberish
And motherfuckers act like they forgot about Dre
In addition to landing on several different singles charts, the track won a Grammy for Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group at the 2001 Grammy Awards.
