Today in Hip Hop History: Hello Nasty

Hello Nasty (1998)

July 14, 1998

The Beastie Boys released their fifth studio album, Hello Nasty, through Capitol Records in 1998. Hello Nasty came 4 years after their previous record, and featured production from the Beastie Boys and Mario Caldato Jr.. The album had four singles; “Intergalactic”, “Body Movin”, “The Negotiation Limerick File”, and “Remote Control/Three MC’s and One DJ”.

Apparently, the title for the album was inspired by a receptionist of their NY based publicity firm Nasty Little Man, who would answer the phone with “Hello Nasty”.

“Hello Nasty”, like many other Beastie Boys releases, has received several accolades and awards in various parts of the world. It is RIAA certified Platinum in 4 different countries, and RIAA certified Gold in 5 others. The album won 2 awards at the 1999 Grammy’s, in the categories of Best Alternative Music Album and Best Rap Performance by a Duo or Group for “Intergalactic”.
