Today in Hip Hop History: December 13, 2011
Snoop Dogg x Wiz Khalifa released a collaborative soundtrack album, Mac & Devin Go to High School, through Atlantic and Rostrum Records in 2011. The soundtrack was made alongside the 2012 film of the same name, which featured both of the hip hop stars in a stoner comedy film.
The album featured the duo’s hit single, “Young, Wild & Free” along with tracks with Juicy J, Curren$y, Mike Posner and Bruno Mars. The production was handled by Snoop and Wiz with outside help from Ted Chung and Benjy Grinberg.
The duo excited fans with announcements of the collaboration, as the two stoner rappers represent different generations of weed raps; Snoop Dogg is the O.G. weed rapper and Wiz Khalifa was, at the time, the upcoming star in hip hop.
The funniest thing about the film and soundtrack has to be the fact that they had 40 year old Snoop Dogg acting as a high schooler. I mean seriously, look at the guy
Regardless, the free film provided stoners and rap fans alike with entertainment starring the likes of several hip hop artists: Mystikal, YG, Tyga, Ty Dolla $ign and Mike Epps all had small roles in the film.
The soundtrack Mac & Devin Go to High School peaked at #29 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Chart and #3 on the U.S. Top Soundtracks Chart in 2011. The film & soundtrack combo provided the newer generation with a new How High-type rapper collab stoner film, and for that, we thank you Snoop and Wiz!
