Today in Hip Hop History: November 1, 2004,
Bay Area hip hop legend Mac Dre was shot and killed in Kansas City, Missouri on November 1, 2004. The rapper recently played a show the night before the incident.
There was a dispute at a club with a promoter over money issues and later that morning Hicks died in a drive-by shooting from injuries to the neck. The assailant was never found, and Mac Dre was buried in his hometown Oakland, California.
Mac Dre began recording raps in 1989 and throughout his 15+ year career invented several slang terms in addition to coining the famous “hyphy” movement from the Bay Area scene. After serving time in prison for refusing to talk to the cops, Dre found himself moving away from his gangster roots to a more party lifestyle.
The rapper began experimenting with ecstasy and psychedelic mushrooms, which eventually led to the invention of “Thizz,” a term describing some bomb ass ecstasy. He then created his own record label Thizz Entertainment and led the way in the hip hop scene in the early to mid 2000’s.
Mac Dre is a Bay Area legend. Rest in Peace Andre Hicks (1970-2004).
