Danny Brown released his third studio album, Old, through Fool’s Gold Records in 2013. The album was his first that was officially pressed and sold through retailers and music outlets, as his first albums were self-released via the internet. Old features production from A-Trak, BADBADNOTGOOD, Nick Catchdubs, Corin Roddick, Frank Dukes and several others. It features vocals from Freddie Gibbs, Purity Ring, SchoolBoy Q, A$AP Rocky, Ab-Soul and many more.
Danny approached the album as if he was making it into a vinyl record; it contains a side A and a side B with two aspects to it. One half was his archetypal underground hip hop music while the other was the more turnt rap trap music. The record speaks on his career path but Brown admits that he “doesn’t really know what it focuses on.” Danny also went on tour for the album, titled the “Old & Reckless Tour.”
The album peaked at #18 on the Billboard 200 and #3 on the US Top Rap Albums Chart. Complex, XXL and Pitchfork all ranked Old in their top 10 albums of 2013. It receieved phenomenal reviews from music critics, citing his abilitiy to balance between underground and mainstream hip hop with such success. It was a worthy sequel project to his oft-revered about mixtape XXX from 2012.
