19 year old Swae Lee and 20 year old Slim, together named Rae Sremmurd, took hip hop by surprise when they released their songs “No Flex Zone” and “No Type.” Mainstream hip hop audiences ate up their catchy hooks and simple lyrics over hard trap beats. The Atlanta-based Trap rap duo then went on to release their debut album, SremmLife, through Mike-Will-Made-It‘s imprint EarDrummers Entertainment and Interscope Records one year ago today.

SremmLife contains production from Mike-Will-Made-It, Honorable C.N.O.T.E., Sonny Digital, Soundz and BackPack, among others. It features the likes of Jace (of Two-9), Nicki MinajBig Sean and Young ThugSremmLife brought 11 songs and over 45 minutes of catchy trap/pop rap to mainstream hip hop from none other than those of which are within the targeted audience’s age. At the current peak that is mainstream trap, Rae Sremmurd nailed it with several tracks of their debut receiving significant radio airplay and representing party anthems.

The young duo’s debut album performed ridiculously well this past year due to its long list of successful singles and promotion. SremmLife peaked at #5 on the U.S. Billboard Chart and #1 on the U.S. Top R&B/Hip-Hop and Top Rap Charts. It has sold over 100,000 copies and continues to place on many publications’ top albums lists: #3 on Complex’s Top 50 Albums of 2015, #23 on Entertainment Weekly’s Top 40 Albums of 2015 and #44 on Rolling Stone’s Top 50 Albums of 2015. Additionally, the album contains 5 singles, nearly half of the entire album, that have charted on the U.S. Billboard 100.

Due to the unexpected success of their debut album, the duo has elected to create and release a second album following the same title, as Mike-Will-Made-It tweeted:

The duo will supposedly release their sophomore effort in early 2016, namely this upcoming February. Until then, we’ll just have to slap their first SremmLife tracks.
