Today in Hip Hop History: Supa Dupa Fly

Supa Dupa Fly (1997)

July 15, 1997

Missy Elliott released her debut studio album, Supa Dupa Fly, through her own Goldminded Records in 1997. Features on the album include Ginuwine, Lil Kim, Busta Rhymes, Nicole and Aaliyah. The production was handled completely by the great Timbaland. The recording sessions took place at the Master Sound Studios in Virginia Beach, Virginia.

Supa Dupa Fly consists of alternative hip hop, hip hop, dance, R&B, and soul. A raw unfiltered Missy on Supa Dupa Fly demands respect on the mic; both for herself and women in general. As part of the promotion for her album, Elliott performed at the 1998 Lilith Fair tour; she became the first female rapper to perform at the event.

The album debuted at 3 on the Billboard 200 and topped the Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums chart. It was certified RIAA platinum and worldwide has sold more than 2.5 million copies
