Today in Hip Hop History: October 25, 1977
American DJ and producer Daniel Alan Maman, aka The Alchemist aka Mudfoot, was born in Beverly Hills, California in 1977. The Alchemist is one of hip hop’s leading producers and has produced for numerous other successful artists in his extensive discography.
He started his career in hip hop by co-founding the duo The Whooliganz with now actor Scott Caan. At an early age, Daniel caught the attention of B Real of Cypress Hill, who then invited The Whooliganz to join his crew, The Soul Assassins. The group consisted of House of Pain, Cypress Hill and Funkdoobiest at the time. DJ Muggs of Cypress Hill then proceeded to mentor Alchemist with his record production. He then joined Dilated Peoples with his good childhood friend Evidence, and became the producer for the group. The group has become one of the most known underground hip hop acts in recent history.
In addition to his main gig with Dilated Peoples, The Alchemist has produced for artists such as Nas, Ghostface Killah, Snoop Dogg, Action Bronson, Fashawn, Eminem, Mobb Deep, Mac Miller, Curren$y, Domo Genesis, and many more. He is also currently one half of the Rhymesayers-signed duo Stepbrothers, with Evidence. Furthermore he composed the official score for the video game Grand Theft Auto 5 and is now Eminem’s official touring DJ.
The Alchemist is without a doubt one of the best producers in recent hip hop history. His list of production credits, collaborations and overall quality music remains too long to list in one small post. His 24 year career thus far has been one of the most impressive and consistent of any hip hop producers during that span of time. Happy 38th birthday Daniel!
