Today in Hip Hop History: September 22, 2003
Australian hip hop group Hilltop Hoods released their 3rd studio album, The Calling, through Obese Records in 2003. The unprecedented success of the album propelled hip hop to a mainstream audience in Australia, after years of underground support for the genre.
The Calling was recorded from 2001-2003 and was completely produced by the group themselves. Additionally, the album contained features from Simplex, Hyjak, DJ Bones and Certified Wise. The group used Suffa‘s mother’s computer to record the album, providing insight on why some of the music quality is questionable at best.
In addition to the album, The Hilltop Hoods released a live DVD The Calling Live which included film clips, remixes, interviews and much more, in addition to reissuing the album in 2009.
In 2006, The Calling became the first Australian hip hop release to achieve a Platinum Certification. The album peaked at #50 on the Australian Albums Chart in 2012. It has became a certified Australian hip hop classic. S/O to AU!
