Katrina Laverne Taylor, aka Trina, was born in Miami, Florida 37 years ago today. Trina is a rapper and model, and according to XXL Magazine, “The most consistent female rapper of all time.” In her early life, she began writing raps and gained the attention of fellow Miami rapper Trick Daddy, who featured her first on his 1998 song “Nann Nigga.” The song became a hit and garnered attention for Trina in her upcoming.
As a result of “Nann Nigga,” Trina scored a record deal with Slip-N-Slide Records and began working on her debut album. Despite Trina admitting that a lot of her creative control was usurped in recording the album, Da Baddest Bitch achieved much success. The debut peaked at #1 on the U.S. Billboard 200 Charts and became RIAA Certified Gold.
Since then, Trina has released 4 albums and is currently working on her 6th. She has received nominations for several awards, ranging from BET’s Best Female Hip-Hop Artist 9 times and Best New Artist from The Source in 2001. In addition, Trina started the Diamond Doll Foundation, which helps to assist young girls with life struggles. Happy 37th birthday Trina!
