Boy, does Vic Mensa love to keep his fans waiting. It’s been some time since the Chicago native dropped any new music, his last project being 2016’s There’s Alot Going On. Mensa even cancelled the release of his debut album, the since-scrapped Traffic, opting to release the aforementioned prelude EP instead. Well, it appears the time has come for that debut to finally happen. Announced with a video on Mensa’s Facebook page, The Manuscript is set to drop some time tomorrow.
The title certainly fits the “more political and personal” description stated in the DJBooth article, although There’s Alot Going On already fits that description as well. The Flint water crisis and the shooting of Laquan McDonald were both mentioned, along with a track vividly describing the ups and downs in Vic’s life leading up to his signing with Roc Nation and the recording of the EP. Certainly there’s still a lot going on currently, what with our president being a former reality television star and all, so there’s no doubt that Vic has plenty to speak on. But was the last project just a warmup for a much more vicious and deeper Mensa, or is The Manuscript just going to be more of the same? The only thing that can be known for sure is that tomorrow has all the answers.
Will Vic’s time and effort lead to a far greater album than Traffic ever was? Or will he slip back into the ways of his more unpopular singles that he released when he first signed to the Roc (barring “U Mad?”, that one is a banger)? The video doesn’t give many answers, but the album definitely will. This could just be the beginning as well; the video’s caption reads “The Manuscript 6/8. 1 of 2″. The “1 of 2” part is where the mystery arises, but knowing Mensa we’re just going to have to wait to find out. Check out the video below and stay tuned to True Too for more news on the album when it drops tomorrow.
