Although you may not have been able to tell had it not been posted to his SoundCloud, this is indeed Mac Miller singing Billy Joel’s “Vienna.” The tone alteration of the voice is an interesting production decision, although it makes sense as Mac’s raspy Pittsburgh pipes may not lend themselves well to crooning. However, this creates a stark contrast between this cover and the original, having transformed from a more upbeat and musical track to a dramatically depressing one. The absence of the accordions from Billy Joel’s version is a bit disappointing too, but the way this rehash is going they would have seemed a bit out of place. How this track came to be is a mystery, as the only comment from Mac is “Thank You Clancy For Putting Me On This Song.” It’d be interesting to hear more about the artistic process that went into this as it is perhaps Mac Miller’s first foray into being more than just a rapper.
