Australia’s favourite retro rap group are back! The enigmatic duo of X & Hype have been dropping random gems over the last few months including Squad Love and Ho Ho Ho. “PACINO’S FREE w/ Rico Pacino” marks their first semblance of a cohesive project since “Da Mutantz Mixtape” which dropped 9 months ago. In their latest offering X & Hype have teamed up with prominent collaborators and fellow Sydney artist’s Rico Pacino and Geek.
Inspiration for the tape came from Pacino’s release from jail and his hopping straight into the studio. Without wasting time, Pacino and X & Hype banged out the whole project and then some in just 4 days, possibly on some Future x Drake shit. During this time they would also freestyle in the heart of Sydney at Town Hall Station every Thursday, often making $100 and instantly blowing it on ramen and alcohol. Believe it or not but all of Pacino’s, and some of Charles X’s, verses were straight up off-the-dome freestyles.
The tape has a fun 80’s feel to it mixed with a bit of reggae flavor, a deadly summertime combo. It was originally made without intention of releasing it but it would of been a crime to keep something this hot in the vault. Fun fact: one of the dopest tracks, “Last Knight,” was born from a $1 beat off of Bandcamp and has since evolved into an infectious freestyle that brings on feelings of nostalgia for when rap was at its purest and most fun. “Padawan,” featuring incredibly talented Sydney rapper Geek, harnesses an X Files inspired beat produced by 26th Letter accompanied by rapid fire deliveries from every direction. Geek’s refreshing CL Smooth type flow masterfully glides over the instrumental in a truly spooky way.
