Back in 2000 you would probably had have never heard of Kanye West now 15 years later he recently got married, became a father, released some of the hottest shoes of the year, and had the most talked about show at fashion week. With all these major events happening you have to wonder what direction the self-proclaimed “biggest rock star on the planet” will take on his seventh solo studio album.
We have been given a couple of tracks the past couple months that only adds to the curiosity. The first being ‘Only One’ featuring Beatles own Paul McCartney on piano. This track sounds very much like an Optimistic 808 & Heartbreak, with Kanye softly singing a lullaby from the perspective of his mother. Yeezy and Sir Paul would again collaborate on a single for the upcoming Rihanna album on a song called “FourFiveSeconds”. This track has Mr. McCartney on guitar strumming to a slow beat with Bad Girl RiRi almost yelling most of her vocals on top as well as Kanye coming in to give us two verses. My favorite line being “Hold me back I’m bout to spaz”. Only a month later Kanye would be joined by fellow Chicago native Vic Mensa and singer song writer Sia to deliver a song titled “Wolves” on SNL’s 40th anniversary special. This track has a very heavy bass and low beat allowing Sia and Vic to sort of float on top with light vocals. However, this track was never formally released as a single so it leads me to wonder if it’s actually complete or just an interlude on the full album. Two weeks later Kanye was booked to play at the 2015 Brit Awards in London, rumours spread about Kanye preforming a new song. That night Kanye did something that I have never heard someone do, he had a performance that was so good people were underwhelmed when the official track was released a week later. The G.O.O.D. M.U.S.I.C. founder performed his latest release titled “All Day” on stage with not only Allan Kingdom and Theophilus London (who are both being featured on the track) but also about 35 other guys whom most are involved in the local Grime scene in England. Oh and I should mention they were dressed in all black and HAD FLAMETHROWERS! Even Taylor Swift was in the crowd getting down. This performance made the whole internet explode and the hype for some new Ye was at an all-time high.
The past few months I have noticed Kanye has been doing something unusual, he has been staying in the public eye. A couple weeks before the “All Day” performance he returned to the Grammys to which he was previously boycotting for severally years. At the awards he surprisingly did several interviews and two performances. Let’s not forget who we are talking about though, Kanye played a joke on the world by pretending to walk on stage while Beck was accepting his award for Album of the year then made some negative comments about Beck winning after the show. A few days later Kanye apologised on twitter and stated he thought the album was pretty good. So I guess everyone just forgave him and moved on?? Kanye also did an interview with The Breakfast Club, which he has been on before, resulting in him dissing multiple hosts of the show. This time was very different though. We were able to see a much calmer, happier Kanye. He stated he will be following the common trend in releasing the album as a surprise. This means Yeezus followers now have to sit in anticipation knowing that a new album could be released at any moment. With four very different songs releasing in the past few months no one has a clue what to expect from the new Kanye album. I personally hope it sounds like something between the new Young Thug mixtape and Pink Floyds Dark Side of The Moon. Seth Rogan did say that Mr. West rapped the whole album in the back of a limo for him. So unless the Pineapple Express stoner can help us get the album any sooner we are left waiting for The Louis Vuitton Don and his team to quench the thirst of hip hop fans across the world. With a title like So Help Me God we are sure in for a treat.
