It’s only Wednesday, but thanks to YG we’ve been given a little taste of that Friday goodness. Originally set to release on the 17th, YG has dropped his sophomore album Still Brazy two days ahead of schedule. The West coast prodigy has been hyping this release since the release of “Twist My Fingaz,” the album’s first single which dropped last July. Since then YG has followed with other leading hits like “Why You Always Hatin?” and the ever-relevant “Fdt.”
G-funk’s resurrector promises to bring more sun-soaked, alien synths with his second release; however, this time he’s done it without DJ Mustard. Most would see this as a daring move, given that Mustard is responsible for a great deal of My Krazy Life. Be that as it may, Terrace Martin, another big contributor to YG’s last album, has stuck around for a second round with Bompton’s own, and producers like Ty Dolla $ign and Hit-Boy are here to help fill the void created by Mustard’s absence as well.
Another notable difference between Still Brazy and YG’s last album is the lack of prominent features. Both Drake and Lil Wayne return to lend a hand and a verse, but other than that the featured artists are lesser known LA rappers like Jay 305 and Slim 400. This wouldn’t be that big of a deal if My Krazy Life wasn’t littered with big names like half of TDE’s roster, Nicki Minaj and Meek Mill. Regardless, YG is sure to deliver a quality piece of work with or without big name assistance.
YG’s championing of classic West coast style is refreshing and a welcome addition to any summer rotation of songs. The real question is just how many BBQ bangers has he presented us with? Make sure you listen to Still Brazy on Apple Music while it’s still fresh and check back to True Too soon for a full in-depth review. Until then, fuck Donald Trump.
