Unless you’ve been living under a rock, you’ve probably heard Willie Maxwell, better known as Fetty Wap’s hit song ’Trap Queen” way too much. In 2015 it seems Fetty can do no wrong if he’s releasing hit after hit. We’ve compiled everything you need to know about the Patterson, New Jersey native because he’s definitely someone to keep an eye on. See what I did there?
The number one question that’s on most minds is, “what’s up with his eye?” I know when I first saw him I thought it must have been something gang affiliated. Something violent to share a story about. Nope, just your average bout of Glaucoma.
I tell everybody it’s nothing, because it’s really nothing to me,” he told Shade 45’s DJ Self. “What happened is, when I was little I had gotten into a little accident and it gave me congenital glaucoma in both of my eyes. The doctor saved one, I was blessed to still have my vision. That’s it. That’s the story.
The origin of Fetty’s name is simple. “Fetty” is slang for money, and “Wap” is a tribute to his idol, Gucci Mane who also goes by “Guwap.” Gucci’s 2006 mixtape Chicken Talk is the first tape Fetty ever published. Fetty only started rapping 2 years ago, before being signed to RGF Productions with which he is still affiliated.
If you’ve been playing his songs “Trap Queen,” “679,” and “My Way” amongst many others, you would have noticed his ad-lib “Remy Boyz….. 1738!” Just like most rappers these days, Fetty has a squad, and they call themselves the Remy Boyz 1738 after the premium Rèmy Martin cognac.
When speaking to VladTV he explained:
1738 is the finest liquor in the urban district. If you go to the liquor store and you get a bottle of 1738, it’s going to be the most expensive Remy… And that’s what we are, we’re the finest, we’re the best,
2015 has been an amazing year for Fetty, who has become the first male rapper to have two concurrent Billboard top 10 singles in four years and the first rapper to have his first 4 singles featured in the top 10 Hot Rap Songs chart at the same time. His pages on the popular lyrics site Genius have been viewed a combined 4,360,666 times – which makes him the third most popular artist on the site behind Kendrick Lamar and Drake. That’s crazy, though I’m not sure how much of that has to do with not understanding a word he is saying.
Along with all this success, his No. 1 single “Trap Queen” has also gone gold, which means its sold over 500,000 copies. Insane. The song is actually about his girlfriend at the time, but they’ve split now as she had to go off to college. The song has grabbed the attention of big players in the music game, with Kanye West, Beyonce, Jay Z and Rihanna amongst celebrities who’ve said that they are fans of Fetty. Kanye invited him out to perform in New York, along with the most unlikely of combinations being when Taylor Swift brought him out to perform at her concert in Seattle.
I encourage everyone to check out Fetty’s interviews as he is a genuinely down to earth guy who doesn’t try to be something he’s not, and is just trying to do the best he can for his family. By wearing the Haitian flag in honor of his partner’s grandmother who passed away, the man is truly being a genuine individual. In an industry which is full of fakes and wannabes, Fetty is a refreshing new player. The craziest thing is that all this success is before his debut album. The buzz is building up to it’s September 25 release, and it’s going to be an early birthday present for me. (My birthday’s on the 27th, feel free to email me presents).
We’ve got some reference points for you below to check out, as believe it or not he actually has more than 3 good songs. Have a listen and let us know what you think!
